Hip hop artists Dr Syntax and Pete Cannon have been touring as an MC and DJ duo since 2010.
Both reputed solo artists in their own right, their music and live shows combine witty lyricism, gob-smackingly banging beats and general tomfoolery to great effect.
Having released music separately for over a decade, in 2014 they released their debut collaborative album, ‘Killer Combo!’ on their own ‘Tactical Thinking’ imprint. The album featured guests Del The Funky Homosapien (Gorillaz/Deltron 3030), Dirty Dike (High Focus), Lunar C, Jehst (YNR/Lowlife), Eva Lazarus and Jman.
They then formed a 4-piece live band with Manchester musicians Adisa Allen (drums) and Matt Wilmot (keys), and embarked on an extensive UK tour. While the duo was already a well-known and popular act on the British hip hop scene, the band has gone down a storm with fans new and old, adding a fresh dynamic to the established show.
In September 2015, The duo will release their second album, ‘Elaborate Anoraks’, through Leicester’s Kompyla Records imprint. The album features Bristol hip hop luminaries Upfront and Res One of Split Profits, as well as Slamboree and Red Eye Hi Fi frontwoman Kathika. Their band, now a 5-piece with James Defty on bass, will embark on a UK tour from September.
In his own right, Dr Syntax has been a well-known face on the British Hip Hop scene since he appeared on Foreign Beggars’ ‘Asylum Speakers’ album in 2004. Since then, he has released numerous albums including 2007’s ‘Self Taught’ (widely regarded as a UK rap classic), and performed at countless shows and festivals worldwide.
Since 2011, he has been a frequent collaborator with acclaimed Manchester hip hop band The Mouse Outfit, appearing on their albums ‘Escape Music’ and ‘Step Steadier’, and has released an EP with the band’s producer Pitch (‘The Evidence’). He has toured extensively as the band’s frontman in the UK and Europe, including at music festivals such as Boom Town Fair, Bestival, Glastonbury, Shambala (UK), Outlook, Soundwave (Croatia) and Fusion (Germany) to name a few.
In recent years, Blackpool-born Pete Cannon has cemented his reputation as a versatile, prolific and in-demand producer. He has produced for top UK Hip Hop acts such as Dirty Dike, Lunar C and Verb T, and released a remix album on the legendary High Focus label. He has worked with US heavyweights Action Bronson and Guilty Simpson, and even has a top 10 chart hit under his belt (Rizzle Kicks’ ‘Lost Generation’). He makes electronic music under the name Opal Block (on the Astral Black label), and has produced a jungle collaboration with Ghost Writerz, ‘How We’re Living’, released through Tru Thoughts, which has received radio play on BBC Radio One and 1Xtra. He has also appeared on Charlie Sloth’s show on 1Xtra for an extensive interview and showcase of his beats, and released an EP, ‘Smoking Kills’ alongside Manchester MC Black Josh (Levelz/Blah).
